Help Heal Veterans CEO Appointed to AFCI Board of Directors

Appointment to Lead to Increased Collaboration on Craft Therapy

WINCHESTER, Calif. – The Association For Creative Industries (AFCI) has appointed Joe McClain, CEO of Help Heal Veterans, to its Board of Directors. Help Heal Veterans (Heal Vets) is the nation’s largest provider of free therapeutic arts and crafts kits to U.S. veterans and active-duty military personnel. The AFCI is the premier trade association for the global creative-arts-products industries.

“As a new member of the AFCI Board, I am there to serve the members, as well as broaden the industry, create new opportunities and to bring the expertise we have here at Help Heal Veterans,” said McClain, a retired U.S. Navy captain. “I’m honored to be a part of the board and serve alongside leaders who are making a great impact in the craft industry and business world.”

Help Heal Veterans, a nonprofit organization founded during the Vietnam War, uses craft therapy to improve the lives, cognitive functioning and mental health of the men and women who have been injured while serving our country. Craft kits are free to women and men who have been injured in service, and often are incorporated into their rehabilitation programs. Help Heal Veterans has distributed nearly 31 million kits since 1971, with crafts including woodworking, leather, painting and many others.

“We are excited to welcome our newest Board candidates and know they will strengthen our Board’s breadth of knowledge and continue to diversify skills and member categories represented, allowing the Board to best represent the interest of the Association’s membership as well as the industry as a whole. These individuals bring a wealth of talent, expertise, and energy to the table and will be tremendous assets to our Board and Association as we continue to evolve the strategic direction and push for the greater membership value and growth for the industry,” said David Murray, 2017 AFCI Nominating Committee Chair.

The AFCI Board of Directors meets quarterly to assess needs of the craft industry and spearhead new programs to support members of the AFCI. Joe McClain will serve a three-year term working to support the craft community as well as extending Help Heal Veterans’ mission to use the healing power of craft therapy to help injured veterans lead fuller lives.
