Mr. Michael Lawson – Treasurer, An Independent Voting Member

A healthcare executive serving America’s veterans for more than four decades, Mr. Michael Lawson was appointed to the Board of Directors of Help Heal Veterans (HEAL VETS) in October 2013. Currently, he is an independent contractor with the Sinclair Advisory Group, a management consulting firm.

Mr. Lawson was Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Boston Health Care System for 14 years. During that time, he successfully managed the restructuring of historically independent health care facilities to create a single, cohesive tertiary care center. Before that, he directed two other VA medical centers, was the Deputy Director of VA’s Southwestern Region, and led the Department’s Medical Administration Service, a national position based in Washington, D.C. For ten years, he held progressively responsible positions at five other VA medical facilities.

“Early in my career I became acutely aware of the many and varied legal and ethical issues that arose in the care and treatment of disabled veterans,” Mr. Lawson says. “For the next forty years, I became more and more involved in such matters and took on a more active role in dealing with those issues.”

Michael LawsonAs a U.S. Army veteran who served as an infantry officer in a combat unit during Vietnam, issues affecting military veterans are especially meaningful to Mr. Lawson. “I am honored to be a part of the HEAL VETS tradition of service and benefits to those Americans who put their private interests aside to serve in maintenance and defense of the United States,” he says.

Mr. Lawson is a graduate of Syracuse University, and earned a Masters of Public Administration from the State University of New York at Albany. He received the Meritorious Presidential Rank Award, the William A. Nelson Award for Excellence in Health Care Ethics, and other distinguished awards.

He and his wife, Susan, a lawyer specializing in labor law, are the parents of three adult children. They reside in Walpole, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. Mr. Lawson has an avid interest in American History, caring for pet Labrador Retrievers, and enjoying the couple’s summer home on Cape Cod.
